Product Description

A Kaplan turbine is a type of reaction turbine specifically engineered to convert the combined pressure energy and kinetic energy of water into mechanical energy. Unlike its counterpart - the Pelton turbine, which is an impulse turbine suitable for high-head and low-flow applications - the Kaplan turbine operates efficiently in low to medium-head, high-flow conditions, which are common in plain area hydropower stations and river channel projects.

It achieves this by guiding water through a spiral casing (also known as a volute) that evenly distributes the water around the runner, where the water flows axially through the runner blades, transferring its energy to the adjustable blades with high efficiency. The runner of a Kaplan turbine features adjustable propeller-like blades that can be rotated to adapt to changes in water flow and head, making it highly efficient in converting hydraulic energy into rotational mechanical energy even under varying operating conditions.

Kaplan turbines are primarily designed for vertical axis configurations, although horizontal axis models (often called propeller turbines) are also available for smaller installations or shallow water conditions. Their ability to adapt to a wide range of flow rates and low to medium head conditions makes them a widely used type of hydropower turbine, suitable for applications such as river channel hydropower stations, irrigation project power generation, and low-head dams, where large water flow and flexible energy conversion are required.
