| Rail tie plate, or base plate, sole plate, is a steel plate fastened on rail tracks between flanged T rail and the sleepers. The tie plate holds the rail to correct gauge and increases bearing area. They are fastened to wooden ties by spikes, bolts or elastic clips through holes in the plate.
